Somerset in the southwest of England covers an area of 1330 square miles (3450km2). Bristol and Gloucestershire border it to the north, Wiltshire to the east, Dorset to the southeast and Devon in the southwest. There is also over 40 miles (64km) of coastline on the northern border, formed by the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel. Within the county borders are the Mendip Hills, the Quantock Hills and 71% of Exmoor National Park [29% lies in Devon]; Taunton in the south is the county town. Somerset is a rural county of rolling hills and large flat expanses of land such as the Somerset Levels, a sparsely populated wetland area of central Somerset. Bath, in the northeast of the county, is a World Heritage Site and lies on the river Avon. Bath has the only natural mineral spring in the UK and has attracted visitors and cure seekers for centuries. The city also boasts over 140 historic buildings and terraces.
